It was in 1987 when two visionaries partners, Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, wanted to realize their dreams of producing wines of a quality far superior to the one that was being produced in Chile at that time. They added in 1988 the other two original partners, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, giving birth to Vina Montes. Colchagua is one of the Chilean wine valleys with the most international prestige, in which Vina Montes was a pioneer in establishing. This valley is located in the central zone of Chile, less than two hours driving from its capital, Santiago. Montes vineyards are in Apalta and Marchigue, a unique location where the mild sun exposure and influence from the Pacific make for balanced ripeness. Here, the soils are of granitic origin and vary in their clay content, amount of organic matter, depth, and especially in their types of fluvial and glacial stones, reflecting the tremendous diversity of soils in their vineyards. This superb wine represents a whole new dimension for Carmenere, the long-lost grape variety that recently resurfaced in Chile after being presumed extinct in Bordeaux, its original home. Purple Angel, has been recognized as Chile's best Carmenere . The nose offers an interesting combination of potency and elegance with aromas of black fruits such as blackberries and figs. Sweet spices including nutmeg intermingle with dark chocolate which fuse with light toasted notes that come from aging in French oak barrels. Pair with braised ox tail or short ribs with black pepper scented polenta, mushroom risotto, or pepper jack cheese with sweet quince jam. .
