The 2022 Barnard Griffin Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia Valley, Washington, is a rich and complex wine that highlights the exceptional conditions of the 2022 growing season. The vintage experienced a wet spring, a hot summer, and a perfect fall, leading to a harvest that began 25 days later than usual. This extended growing period allowed the grapes to develop deep flavors without excessive sugar or acidity, resulting in a balanced and authentic Washington wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon is complemented by a blend of other French varietals, which add layers of complexity and depth to the wine. Tasting notes describe mesmerizing aromas of plum, vanilla, black currants, and subtle hints of raspberry and toasted oak. On the palate, blueberries and dark plums mingle with rose petals, dark chocolate, and crushed brick dust, creating an intriguing perfume. The wine has a sleek, slippery texture with flavors of black cherries, black tea, and cinnamon, all supported by refined tannins and integrated acidity. Wine Spectator awarded the wine 92 points, noting its blackberry, cherry preserve, and toasted cedar flavors, calling it "just plain lovely." The wine is aged for 19 months in a combination of French oak and oak tanks, with 70% of the oak being neutral, contributing to its smooth texture and balance. With 8000 cases produced and an ABV of 13.7%, this wine is a standout example of the Columbia Valley’s potential for producing rich, balanced reds.
