The 2023 Domaine Sérol Oudan De Butte en Blanc Viognier is a voluptuous, aromatic wine from the Côte Roannaise, crafted by Stéphane and Carine Sérol on their biodynamic estate. This Viognier, grown on steep, south-facing slopes with gravel soils over granite, is made from vines planted between 2007 and 2012. The wine is fermented naturally in 500-liter oak barrels and aged for over six months on lees, which imparts richness and weight to its fruit flavors, including apricot, peach, and mandarin. The wine is medium to full-bodied, well-structured, and grippy, with a fresh, grassy bouquet and aromas of apricot, peach, and floral notes. The palate is pure, fresh, and serious in its structure, with fine bitters and aromatic freshness. It has undergone full malolactic fermentation, adding complexity, and is lightly filtered with minimal sulfur before bottling. Certified organic and biodynamic, the Oudan de Butte en Blanc showcases the unique terroir of the Côte Roannaise and is a perfect example of the Sérol estate's commitment to producing wines with depth and precision.
